Printer Not Connecting to Wi-Fi? Adelaide & Australia Troubleshooting Guide

A printer that was working yesterday but now shows offline or cannot find your Wi-Fi is one of the most common tech problems in Australian homes. It usually happens after a modem change, a new internet plan, a Wi-Fi password update, or a router reset.

This guide walks through how to reconnect HP, Canon, Brother, and Epson printers to Wi-Fi, fix the offline printer error, and prevent the problem from happening again.

Printer still not working?

We can fix it at your home

Geeks at Door can come to your home, reconnect your printer to Wi-Fi, reinstall drivers, and fix the offline error — across all major brands.

Why your printer won't connect to Wi-Fi

Printers store your Wi-Fi details internally. When anything about your network changes, the printer cannot reconnect automatically. The most common causes:

  • New modem or router — the Wi-Fi name and password are different
  • Wi-Fi password changed — printer still has the old password
  • ISP or Telstra changed your connection — new modem provided
  • Printer set to connect to a 5GHz network — most printers only support 2.4GHz
  • Router assigned a new IP address to the printer — computer cannot find it
  • Printer firmware update reset wireless settings
  • Modem combined 2.4GHz and 5GHz under one name — printer got confused
  • Printer wireless settings accidentally reset

Before you start — quick checks

Try these steps first before running the full setup wizard:

  1. Turn the printer off, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on.
  2. Turn your modem/router off, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on.
  3. Make sure your phone or computer can connect to the same Wi-Fi network — the problem may be the internet itself, not just the printer.
  4. Check your Wi-Fi password is correct — most connection failures are wrong passwords.
  5. If your modem has both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, make sure you are selecting the 2.4GHz one for the printer.
  6. Move the printer closer to the modem temporarily for the setup process.

Important: Do not factory reset your modem to fix a printer problem. A modem reset changes your Wi-Fi name and password and disconnects every device in your home — phones, TVs, computers, cameras, and smart home devices.

Connect HP printer to Wi-Fi

  1. Press the Wireless button on the printer to open wireless settings.
  2. On the printer screen, select Wireless Setup Wizard.
  3. Choose your Wi-Fi network name (SSID) from the list.
  4. Enter your Wi-Fi password using the printer screen.
  5. Wait for the printer to connect — the wireless light should stop blinking and stay solid.
  6. On your computer, go to Settings > Printers & Scanners and add the printer.

Tip: HP Smart app: download on your phone, connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi, open the app and select Add Printer. The app guides the full setup process.

Connect Canon printer to Wi-Fi

  1. On the printer, press Menu and go to LAN Settings > Wireless LAN > Wireless LAN Setup > Standard Setup.
  2. Select your Wi-Fi network name from the list.
  3. Enter your Wi-Fi password.
  4. Confirm the settings and wait for connection.
  5. Alternatively: press and hold the Wi-Fi button until flashing, then press the WPS button on your router within 2 minutes.

Tip: Canon PIXMA printers: make sure your phone is connected to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi during setup — not 5GHz. The Canon printer app (Canon PRINT) can also guide you through connection.

Connect Brother printer to Wi-Fi

  1. On the printer, go to Menu > Network > WLAN > Setup Wizard.
  2. Select your Wi-Fi network name.
  3. Enter the Wi-Fi password.
  4. Press OK and wait for the connection.
  5. If the printer still cannot connect, press and hold the Wi-Fi button for a few seconds to reset wireless settings, then try again.

Tip: Brother iPrint&Scan app: available on iOS and Android. Guides the full wireless setup and lets you print and scan from your phone.

Connect Epson printer to Wi-Fi

  1. Press the Wi-Fi button on the printer. The Wi-Fi light will flash.
  2. Press the WPS button on your router within 2 minutes.
  3. Wait for the Wi-Fi light on the printer to stay solid — this means connected.
  4. If no WPS button on router: go to printer menu > Wi-Fi Setup > Wi-Fi Setup Wizard, select your network and enter the password.

Tip: Epson Connect: the Epson Smart Panel app can guide the wireless setup and also lets you scan directly to your phone.

Fix printer showing offline on your computer

Even when the printer is connected to Wi-Fi, your computer may still show it as offline. This is a driver or IP address problem, not a Wi-Fi problem.

Fix on Windows:

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Click on your printer and select Open print queue.
  3. In the menu, click Printer and uncheck Use Printer Offline if it is ticked.
  4. If that doesn't work, remove the printer: Settings > Printers & scanners > click printer > Remove.
  5. Re-add the printer: click Add a printer or scanner and wait for it to appear.

Fix on Mac:

  1. Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Select your printer and click the minus (−) button to remove it.
  3. Click the plus (+) button to add the printer again.
  4. Select your printer from the list — if it does not appear, make sure both your Mac and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network.

If the printer keeps showing offline even after re-adding, the printer may be getting a new IP address each time it reconnects. Setting a static IP address in your router settings prevents this. Our technicians can do this during a home visit.

Reconnecting your printer after a modem change

Getting a new modem — whether from Telstra, Optus, or your internet provider — usually means a new Wi-Fi name and password. Every device in your home including printers needs to be reconnected.

The safest approach after a modem change:

  1. Write down or save your new Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password from the sticker on the new modem.
  2. Run the wireless setup wizard on your printer (see your brand section above).
  3. Enter the new Wi-Fi name and password.
  4. Remove and re-add the printer on your computer and phone.
  5. Test by printing a test page.

2.4GHz vs 5GHz: why it matters for printers

Almost all home printers connect to Wi-Fi on the 2.4GHz band only. They do not support 5GHz.

If your modem broadcasts both bands under one Wi-Fi name (band steering), your phone may be on 5GHz while the printer can only see 2.4GHz — causing the setup to fail.

How to fix this:

  • Separate the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks on your modem — give them different names (e.g. HomeWiFi-2.4G and HomeWiFi-5G)
  • Connect your phone to the 2.4GHz network before running the printer setup
  • Or temporarily disable 5GHz on your modem during printer setup, then re-enable it after

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my printer connect to Wi-Fi?

The most common reasons are: the Wi-Fi password changed, the modem or router was replaced, the printer is trying to connect to the wrong Wi-Fi network, the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks have the same name, the printer IP address has changed, or the printer's wireless settings need to be reset. Most printers store the old Wi-Fi details and need to be set up again after any network change.

How do I connect an HP printer to Wi-Fi?

On most HP printers, press the Wireless button on the printer, then use the printer's touchscreen or menu to select Wireless Setup Wizard. Choose your Wi-Fi network name and enter the password. On HP OfficeJet and HP LaserJet models, you can also use the HP Smart app on your phone to guide the connection. Make sure your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network during setup.

How do I connect a Canon printer to Wi-Fi?

On Canon PIXMA printers, press and hold the Wi-Fi button until the lamp flashes. Then press the WPS button on your router within 2 minutes. Alternatively, use the printer menu: go to LAN Settings > Wireless LAN > Wireless LAN Setup > Standard Setup and follow the wizard to select your network and enter the password.

How do I connect a Brother printer to Wi-Fi?

On Brother printers, go to Menu > Network > WLAN > Setup Wizard. Select your Wi-Fi network and enter the password. You can also use the Brother iPrint&Scan app to set up the wireless connection. If the printer is showing a connection error, try pressing and holding the Wi-Fi button for a few seconds to reset the wireless settings first.

How do I connect an Epson printer to Wi-Fi?

On Epson printers, press the Wi-Fi button on the printer, then press the WPS button on your router within 2 minutes. If your router does not have a WPS button, go to the printer menu and select Wi-Fi Setup > Wi-Fi Setup Wizard, choose your network and enter the password. The Epson Connect app can also guide the setup.

Why did my printer lose Wi-Fi after I changed my modem?

When you get a new modem or router, the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password usually change. Your printer still has the old settings stored and cannot find the new network. You need to run the printer's wireless setup again using the new Wi-Fi name and password.

My printer shows online on the screen but the computer says it's offline. Why?

This usually happens when the printer's IP address has changed. Printers sometimes get assigned a different IP address by the router, which confuses the computer's printer driver. The fix is usually to remove and re-add the printer on your computer, or to assign the printer a fixed (static) IP address in your router settings.

Can Geeks at Door help connect my printer to Wi-Fi?

Yes. Our technicians can come to your home and help connect your printer to your Wi-Fi network, reinstall printer drivers, fix the offline printer error, and make sure your printer works from all your computers and phones.
