How to Connect Hearing Aids to a New Phone (iPhone & Android)

Getting a new phone is exciting — but for hearing aid users, it also means re-pairing your hearing aids and setting up your manufacturer app again. The process is slightly different depending on whether you have an iPhone or Android, and which brand of hearing aid you use.

This guide covers how to connect Phonak, ReSound, Oticon, Signia, Widex, and Specsavers hearing aids to your new phone — including what to do when the aids will not pair or the app does not recognise them.

How hearing aid Bluetooth works

Modern hearing aids connect to phones using one of two main Bluetooth methods:

Made for iPhone (MFi)

Apple-certified hearing aids connect directly to iPhone using a special Bluetooth protocol. iPhone has a built-in Hearing Devices section under Settings > Accessibility. Most Phonak, ReSound, Oticon, Signia, and Widex aids support this.

Android Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA)

Newer Android phones (Android 10+) support direct hearing aid streaming through the ASHA protocol. Older Android phones may require an intermediary streaming device or the manufacturer app. Compatibility varies by phone brand and model.

Bluetooth Classic

Older hearing aids use standard Bluetooth, which works with most phones but may need pairing through the standard Bluetooth settings rather than a dedicated hearing device menu.

Connect hearing aids to an iPhone

iPhone has a dedicated setting for MFi hearing aids. You do not need to use the regular Bluetooth pairing screen.

  1. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on in Settings.
  2. Open your hearing aid case and take the aids out, or turn them off and on to put them in pairing mode.
  3. Go to Settings on your iPhone.
  4. Tap Accessibility.
  5. Tap Hearing Devices.
  6. Your hearing aids should appear under Devices. Tap the name.
  7. Accept the pairing request — it may appear twice (once for each ear).
  8. The hearing aids will now show as connected.

Once paired, you can control volume, programs, and balance directly from the Hearing Devices screen or from Control Centre (add it in Settings > Control Centre > Hearing).

Not appearing? Try turning Bluetooth off and back on. If the aids were previously paired to your old phone, they may still be trying to connect to it. Power off your old phone temporarily if it is nearby.

Connect hearing aids to an Android phone

Android hearing aid connection depends on your phone model and Android version. Newer Samsung, Pixel, and other Android 10+ phones support direct hearing aid streaming.

  1. Download the manufacturer app for your hearing aids (Phonak MyPhonak, ReSound Smart 3D, Oticon ON, Signia app, or Widex Moment).
  2. Open the app and follow the in-app pairing guide.
  3. When prompted, put your hearing aids in pairing mode (usually by opening and closing the battery door or replacing them in and out of the case).
  4. Accept any Bluetooth permission prompts on your phone.
  5. Complete the setup in the app.

On some Android phones you can also pair through Settings > Connected Devices > Pair new device, then select your hearing aid name. However, using the manufacturer app first usually gives a more stable connection.

Phonak hearing aids pairing guide

Phonak is one of the most common hearing aid brands in Australia. The current Phonak Lumity and Paradise ranges support iPhone streaming directly and Android streaming via the Phonak MyPhonak app.

Pair Phonak to iPhone:

  1. Turn off Bluetooth, then turn it back on.
  2. Open and close the battery doors on both hearing aids (or put them in/out of the case).
  3. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices.
  4. Tap the Phonak name when it appears.
  5. Accept pairing for left and right aids.
  6. Open MyPhonak app for additional controls.

Pair Phonak to Android:

  1. Download MyPhonak from the Google Play Store.
  2. Open MyPhonak and tap My Hearing Aids.
  3. Follow the on-screen pairing steps.
  4. Put the aids in pairing mode when prompted.
  5. Accept Bluetooth permissions.

Phonak Lumity supports ASHA on compatible Android phones, which allows direct streaming without an intermediary device.

ReSound hearing aids pairing guide

ReSound hearing aids (including ReSound OMNIA, ReSound ONE, and Nexia) support direct iPhone streaming and Android streaming via the ReSound Smart 3D app.

Pair ReSound to iPhone:

  1. Enable Bluetooth on your iPhone.
  2. Open the battery doors or remove aids from charging case to enter pairing mode.
  3. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices.
  4. Tap the ReSound device name.
  5. Accept both pairing prompts (left and right).
  6. Download ReSound Smart 3D for volume and program control.

Pair ReSound to Android:

  1. Download ReSound Smart 3D from the Google Play Store.
  2. Open the app and go to Devices.
  3. Put hearing aids in pairing mode.
  4. Follow the in-app pairing steps.

Oticon hearing aids pairing guide

Oticon hearing aids (including Oticon Real, More, and Intent) support direct iPhone streaming. Android streaming is supported on newer models through the ASHA protocol.

  1. For iPhone: go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices. Put Oticon aids in pairing mode (open/close battery doors or remove from case). Tap the Oticon name when it appears and accept.
  2. For Android: download the Oticon ON app. Open it and follow the pairing steps. Ensure your Android phone is version 10 or later for best results.
  3. After pairing, use the Oticon ON app to adjust volume, change programs, and check battery.

Older Oticon models may require the Oticon ConnectClip accessory for streaming to Android phones. Check Oticon's compatibility tool for your specific model.

Signia, Widex, and Specsavers hearing aids

Signia

Signia hearing aids use the Signia app. For iPhone, pair via Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices. For Android, use the Signia app and follow in-app pairing. Recent Signia models support ASHA for direct Android streaming.

Widex

Widex uses the Widex Moment app. Pair via Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices on iPhone, or through the Widex Moment app on Android. Widex Moment and Widex Moment Sheer support direct Android streaming.

Specsavers hearing aids

Specsavers hearing aids are typically Phonak, ReSound, or other branded aids under the Specsavers label. Follow the pairing steps for the underlying brand, or download the Specsavers-recommended app for your model. Check the documentation included with your aids.

Troubleshooting: hearing aids won't connect to phone

If your hearing aids will not pair with your new phone, try these steps in order:

  1. Turn Bluetooth off on your phone, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
  2. Take the hearing aids out of the case (or open and close the battery doors) to restart them and enter pairing mode.
  3. If your old phone is nearby, turn it off — the aids may be trying to connect to it instead.
  4. On iPhone, go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices and check if the aids appear.
  5. Delete the hearing aids from any Bluetooth device list on the old phone if possible.
  6. Try forgetting the aids in your phone's Bluetooth settings and re-pairing from scratch.
  7. Restart your new phone.
  8. Check that the hearing aid battery is not low — some aids will not pair when nearly flat.
  9. Reinstall the manufacturer app if you are using it for Android pairing.

Still not connecting? If none of these steps work, your audiologist may need to update the firmware on your hearing aids, or the aids may need to be reset. Geeks at Door can also come to your home and work through the pairing process with you.

Setting up hearing aids after getting a new phone

When you replace your phone, plan to set aside 15–30 minutes to re-pair your hearing aids and get your apps working. Here is a checklist:

  • Install the manufacturer hearing aid app (MyPhonak, Smart 3D, Oticon ON, etc.)
  • Pair the hearing aids through Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices (iPhone) or through the app (Android)
  • Test streaming audio — play something and check both aids receive the sound
  • Check left/right balance and volume controls work in the app
  • Test phone call audio through the hearing aids
  • Set up any favourite programs or custom settings you had on your old phone
  • Test alerts and notifications sound through the aids if that was set up before

You may also need to log back into the manufacturer app if you had an account — check if your settings were saved to the cloud.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my hearing aids connect to my new phone?

Hearing aids usually need to be unpaired from the old phone before they pair with a new one. Go to your new phone's Bluetooth settings and look for the hearing aids. If they do not appear, open the manufacturer's app (e.g. Phonak MyPhonak, ReSound Smart 3D, Oticon ON) and follow the pairing process from within the app. Some hearing aids need to be put back in their charging case and taken out again to enter pairing mode.

How do I connect Phonak hearing aids to an iPhone?

On iPhone, go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices. Your Phonak hearing aids should appear here when in pairing mode. Tap the name and accept the pairing request. You can also use the Phonak MyPhonak app for volume and program control. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on before you start.

How do I connect Phonak hearing aids to an Android phone?

Phonak aids that support Bluetooth Classic or Android streaming can be paired through the Phonak MyPhonak app. Open the app, go to My Hearing Aids and follow the setup steps. Some Phonak models use an intermediary device (like the Phonak TV Connector or Roger device) for Android streaming. Check your specific model's compatibility on the Phonak website.

How do I connect ReSound hearing aids to my phone?

On iPhone, go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices and tap your ReSound aids when they appear. On Android, download the ReSound Smart 3D app, open it and follow the pairing guide inside the app. ReSound aids use Bluetooth Low Energy and may need to be taken out of the case to enter pairing mode.

How do I connect Oticon hearing aids to my phone?

On iPhone, go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices. On Android, use the Oticon ON app and follow the in-app pairing steps. Oticon aids using OpenSound Navigator support direct iPhone streaming. Android support varies by model — check Oticon's compatibility page for your device.

My hearing aids were connected before but stopped working with my phone. Why?

Common causes include a phone software update that reset Bluetooth, the hearing aids being paired to another device, a low battery in the aids, or the Bluetooth pairing being accidentally removed. Try: turn Bluetooth off and on, take the aids out of the case and back in, then re-pair through Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices (iPhone) or through the manufacturer app (Android).

Do I need an app to control my hearing aids?

You do not always need an app, but manufacturer apps (Phonak MyPhonak, ReSound Smart 3D, Oticon ON, Signia app, Widex Moment) give you volume control, program switching, and battery status from your phone. iPhone users can also use the built-in Hearing Devices section in Settings > Accessibility for basic control.

Can Geeks at Door help me connect my hearing aids to my new phone?

Yes. Our technicians come to your home and help pair your hearing aids with your new iPhone or Android phone, set up the manufacturer app, transfer contacts and settings from your old phone, and make sure everything is working before we leave.
